Satellite Investigation of Semidiurnal Internal Tides in the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas

چکیده

The mode-1 semidiurnal internal tides that emanate from multiple sources in the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas are investigated using multi-satellite altimeter data 1993–2020. A practical plane-wave analysis method is used to separately extract coherent tides, with nontidal noise tide field further removed by a two-dimensional (2-D) spatial band-pass filter. complex radiation pathways and interference patterns of revealed, showing contrast between Sulu Sea Sulawesi Sea. effectively generated both Sangihe Island chains, forming spatially inhomogeneous pattern deep basin. cylindrical tidal wave Sibutu passage confirmed for first time, which modulates pattern. can be reproduced line source model. weak reflected beam off slope revealed. In contrast, chain sole energetic Sea, thus featuring relatively consistent energy flux These beams contribute frequent occurrence solitary waves (ISWs) study area. On basis 28-year satellite measurements, northward 0.46 GW, about 25% southward flux. For M2, altimetric estimated fluxes 80% those numerical simulations. total chains into 2.7 GW.

Semidiurnal internal tides off the east coast of Korea inferred from synthetic aperture radar images

[1] Semidiurnal internal tides propagating toward and along the east coast of Korea are elucidated from the surface manifestation of non-linear internal wave (NLIW) packets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images taken on September 2, 1996. The SAR images reveal two pairs of NLIW packets, one on the northern side of the southwestern East (Japan) Sea and the other on the western side. The NLIW ...

Turbulent Measurements in a Small Subtropical Estuary with Semidiurnal Tides

Since predictions of scalar dispersion in small estuaries can rarely be predicted accurately, new field measurements were conducted continuously at relatively high frequency for up to 50 h per investigation in a small subtropical estuary with semidiurnal tides. The bulk flow parameters varied in time with periods comparable to tidal cycles and other large-scale processes. The turbulence propert...

Diurnal and Semidiurnal Tides in Global Surface Pressure Fields

Global surface pressure data from 1976 to 1997 from over 7500 land stations and the Comprehensive Ocean– Atmosphere Data Set have been analyzed using harmonic and zonal harmonic methods. It is found that the diurnal pressure oscillation (S1) is comparable to the semidiurnal pressure oscillation (S2) in magnitude over much of the globe except for the low-latitude open oceans, where S2 is about t...

Radar wind profiler observations of solar semidiurnal atmospheric tides

Semidiurnal solar tides in the mid-latitude troposphere are investigated using harmonic analysis of 404 MHz radar profiler wind data obtained from a wide longitude zone in the U.S. The tides are apparent above a 1000-m-deep surface layer and increase in amplitude with height, attaining speeds of 0.5-0.7 rn/s at 5-7 km. Observed wind characteristics agree well with tidal characteristics obtained...
